One Day
I’ll get my degree.
I’ll make my money.
I’ll take a break.
I’ll take a breath.
One day.
Just not today.
Or tomorrow,
Because I have to get ready for work
And I’m working a double next Friday
And I am nowhere near my saving goal
So I can’t do any of those things.
Not yet.
My goals are my priority
Not my mind
Or my body
Yet when I try to look at my future,
I catch sight of myself,
And a part of me questions
If the crying,
Eye twitching,
Exhaustion
And shortness of breath
Are all normal.
If the bar I dangle above my head is at a good height
And if I realize that the only way to reach it
In the time frame I’ve given myself
Is a sudden growth spurt
But I i'm no longer growing
And if I jump before I am ready
I may cripple my progress
My expectations
Myself.
So I wonder,
If instead of looking into the distance,
I focus on what's around me.
The days that surround me
Instead of planning for someday,
I take one day.
One day to unfocus
One day to exhale
One day to unwind
One day to rewind
Because the accomplishments behind me
Have been swept under the rug
Because they aren't my end result
So I'll learn to take time
Even a moment
To be proud of myself
Because if I beat myself up on the way to my destination,
I might not make it in one piece.
